Today's Favorite Verse: 3 Nephi 13:24

Today's Favorite Verse: 3 Nephi 13:24
"No man can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will hold to the one and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and Mammon."

I've had some new thoughts on this verse lately. I had always thought of Mammon as another name for Satan. As I have been observing things of late, I realized that people can serve themselves, and place any number of things above God, so their thoughts are not in the right place. Eventually, this road turns you from God. I finally looked up what Mammon means and this is what I found.

Bible Dictionary: Mammon, An Aramaic word meaning "riches"

Wikipedia: Mammon in the New Testament of the Bible is commonly thought to mean money, material wealth, or any entity that promises wealth, and is associated with the greedy pursuit of gain.

Britannica: Mammon, biblical term for riches, often used to describe the debasing influence of material wealth. The term was used by Jesus in his famous Sermon on the Mount and also appears in The Gospel According to Luke. Medieval writers commonly interpreted it as an evil demon or god.

So all this time I had the wrong definition of what Mammon was. Yet, I find it interesting that the spirit taught me what it really meant.

Today's Favorite Verse: 3 Nephi 12:44, 48

Today's Favorite Verse: 3 Nephi 12:44, 48
"But behold I say unto you, love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them who despitefully use you and persecute you;
Therefore I would that ye should be perfect even as I, or your Father who is in heaven is perfect."

One of the first sermons that Jesus gives to the people in the Americas is a discourse similar to the Sermon on the Mount and the Beatitudes found in the Bible. He is the embodiment of them all. I love what Harold B. Lee said of it.

"Christ came not only into the world to make an atonement for the sins of mankind but to set an example before the world of the standard of perfection of God's law and of obedience to the Father. In his Sermon on the Mount the Master has given us somewhat of a revelation of his own character, which was perfect, or what might be said to be 'an autobiography, every syllable of which he had written down in deeds,' and in so doing has given us a blueprint for our own lives."
(President Harold B. Lee, "Decisions for Successful Living" [1973], 55-67)

Day 1949

Wednesday, July 29, 2020

Today's Favorite Verse: 3 Nephi 11:32-34, 38

Today's Favorite Verse: 3 Nephi 11:32-34, 38
"And this is my doctrine, and it is the doctrine which the Father hath given unto me; and I bear record of the Father, and the Father beareth record of me, and the Holy Ghost beareth record of the Father and me; and I bear record that the Father commandeth all men, everywhere, to repent and believe in me.
And whoso believeth in me, and is baptized, the same shall be saved; and they are they who shall inherit the kingdom of God.
And whoso believeth not in me, and is not baptized, shall be damned.
And again I say unto you, ye must repent, and be baptized in my name, and become as a little child, or ye can in nowise inherit the kingdom of God."

This chapter contains so much. "The Father testifies of His Beloved Son - Christ appears and proclaims His Atonement - The people feel the wound marks in His hands and feet and side - They cry Hosanna - He sets forth the mode and manner of baptism - The spirit of contention is of the devil - Christ's doctrine is that men should believe and be baptized and receive the Holy Ghost."

Tonight, I pondered on the doctrine of Christ, and how simple it really is. It requires faith in the Lord, Jesus Christ, repentance and baptism. Becoming as a little child is the continual effort I make to become obedient and do the Father's will, like Christ did. Over the years I have come to appreciate the simplicity of the gospel and strive really hard to not go beyond the mark and complicated it. When I think of the eternities the requirements for all of us is so very basic.

Day 1948

Tuesday, July 28, 2020

Today's Favorite Verse: 3 Nephi 10:2-3, 9-10

Today's Favorite Verse: 3 Nephi 10:2-3, 9-10
"For so great was the astonishment of the people that they did cease lamenting and howling for the loss of their kindred which had been slain; therefore there was silence in all the land for the space of many hours.
And it came to pass that there came a voice again unto the people, and all the people did hear, and did witness of it, saying:
And it came to pass that thus did the three days pass away. And it was in the morning, and the darkness dispersed from off the face of the land, and the earth did cease to tremble, and the rocks did cease to rend, and the dreadful groanings did cease, and all the tumultuous noises did pass away.
And the earth did cleave together again, that it stood; and the mourning, and the weeping, and the wailing of the people who were spared alive did cease; and their mourning was turned into joy, and their lamentations into the praise and thanksgiving unto the Lord Jesus Christ, their Redeemer."

What really struck me was during their three days of darkness, when the earth is literally shaking beneath their feet, that is when they hear the voice of the Lord. They needed the darkness in order to really listen. Throughout this He is there to comfort them, they are not alone in this.

I pondered on how it is through the darkest moments of our lives when we turn to the Lord for the comfort only he can give, that we truly come to know Him. After three days of darkness, hearing the Lord's voice and words the people came to know Him, and love Him. That is why there is joy, praise and thanksgiving to Him when it is all over. They were not joyful because the darkness and the shaking of the earth is over. It is because now they knew who He is. Sometimes we just need to pass through a period of darkness in life in order to see the Light.

Day 1947

Monday, July 27, 2020

Today's Favorite Verse: 3 Nephi 9:13

Today's Favorite Verse: 3 Nephi 9:13
"O all ye that are spared because ye were more righteous than they, will ye not now return unto me, and repent of your sins, and be converted, that I may heal you?"

It's so hard to pick a favorite verse out of this, one of my favorite chapters in all the Book of Mormon. This is the moment after the destruction that took place, and while the people in the Americas sit in darkness, they hear the voice of Jesus Christ. First he tells that it was him that destroyed all these cities because of their wickedness and "that the blood of the prophets and the saints shall not come any more unto me against them." He tells them that the law of Moses is fulfilled. Then in this verse the tone changes and I just weep. He speaks to those that are remaining and calls them to repentance and to come unto Him. What a reminder that we all have something to repent of, even if we are righteous and had been spared. I love how he says "that I may heal you". There are so many ways that the Savior can heal us. He is the master healer for he knows all our wounds and how to comfort us.

Day 1946

Sunday, July 26, 2020

Today's Favorite Verse: 3 Nephi 8:8-10, 19

Today's Favorite Verse: 3 Nephi 8:8-10, 19
"And the city of Zarahemla did take fire.
And the city of Moroni did sink into the depths of the sea, and the inhabitants thereof were drowned.
And the earth was carried up upon the city of Moronihah, that in the place of the city there became a great mountain.
And it came to pass that when the thunderings, and the lighnings, and the storm, and the tempest, and the quakings of the earth did cease - for behold, they did last for about the space of three hours; and it was said by some that the time was greater; nevertheless, all these great and terrible things were done in about the space of three hours - and then behold, there was darkness upon the face of the land."

As I reflected on the great destruction that came upon the Americas when Christ was crucified and died I thought about now no one could ever prepare for such a level of destruction. The earth was in chaos and there was no fleeing from destruction. In fact with the earth shaking for three hours I doubt you could have even gotten up and ran. This was something all of them had to pass through. It was only in the hands of God if you lived or died.

Then I pondered on how the only preparation that could get one through this was a spiritual preparation. The earth may have been left in darkness for three days, and fear may have filled their hearts, but if you had faith in Christ you knew he would be resurrected and light would return. It must have been a great and terrible day. Terrible for those not spiritually prepared for it. A great day for those that knew prophesy was fulfilled. The Savior was making the ultimate sacrifice to redeem them from their sins. It all depended on where your heart was and if fear filled your heart or not. I imagine that same will be said on Christ's Second Coming.

Day 1945

Saturday, July 25, 2020

Today's Favorite Verse: 3 Nephi 7:2

Today's Favorite Verse: 3 Nephi 7:2
"And the people were divided one against another; and they did separate one from another into tribes, every man according to his family and his kindred and friends; and thus they did destroy the government of the land."

This is where I am afraid our nation is headed, if not already starting to happen. This was just four years before the resurrected Christ would appear to them in the Americas and the wicked would be destroyed. This also happened again before the Nephite civilization was destroyed. It is a precursor to rough times ahead for the wicked.

Yet, on the other hand when there is great wickedness those that remain righteous see the hand of God in their lives.

"...And Nephi did minister with power and with great authority...
..for so great was his faith on the Lord Jesus Christ that angels did minister unto him daily.
And in the name of Jesus did he cast out devils and unclean spirits; and even his brother did he raise from the dead, after he had been stoned and suffered death by the people.
And the people saw it, and did witness of it, and were angry with him because of his power; and he did also do many more miracles, in the sight of the people, in the name of Jesus.
...as many as were converted did truly signify unto the people that they had been visited by the power and Spirit of God, which was in Jesus Christ, in whom they believed.
And as many as had devils cast out from them, and were healed of their sicknesses and their infirmities, did truly manifest unto the people that they had been wrought upon by the Spirit of God, and had been healed; and they did show forth signs also and did do some miracles among the people."
(3 Nephi 7:17-22)

and it reminds of this...

"And the glory of the Lord shall be there, and the terror of the Lord also shall be there, insomuch that the wicked will not come unto it, and it shall be called Zion.
And it shall come to pass among the wicked, that every man that will not take his sword against his neighbor must needs flee unto Zion for safety.
And there shall be gathered unto it out of every nation under heaven; and it shall be the only people that shall not be at war one with another.
And it shall be among the wicked: Let us not go up to battle against Zion, for the inhabitants of Zion are terrible; wherefore we cannot stand.
And it shall come to pass that the righteous shall be gathered out from among all nations, and shall come to Zion, singing with songs of everlasting joy."
(Doctrine and Covenants 45:67-71)

Day 1944

Friday, July 24, 2020

Today's Favorite Verse: 3 Nephi 6:14

Today's Favorite Verse: 3 Nephi 6:14
"And thus there became a great inequality in all the land, insomuch that the church began to be broken up; yea, insomuch that in the thirtieth year the church was broken up in all the land save it were among a few of the Lamanites who were converted unto the true faith; and they would not depart from it, for they were firm, and steadfast, and immovable, willing with all diligence to keep the commandments of the Lord."

I pondered on what I might see when the churches fully open up again. The churches may have not been broken up, but the people have been. This pandemic has been hard, and it's not over yet. The true test of the followers of Christ is if they kept the faith when left on their own. The true test of conversion is remaining "firm, and steadfast, and immovable, willing with all diligence to keep the commandments of the Lord." Especially when no one has been looking.

Day 1943

Thursday, July 23, 2020

Today's Favorite Verse: 3 Nephi 5:1, 14

Today's favorite verse: 3 Nephi 5:1, 14
"And behold, there was not a living soul among all the people of the Nephites who did doubt in the least the words of all the holy prophets who had spoken; for they knew that it must needs be that they must be fulfilled.
And it hath become expedient that I, according to the will of God, that the prayers of those who have gone hence, who were the holy ones, should be fulfilled according to their faith, should make a record of these things which have been done."

Mormon is speaking to us in this chapter. I pondered on how it must have felt to know you were fulfilling prophecy by what you were doing. He was abridging the Nephite records as a promise the Lord had give to earlier generations and prophets. He was the means of their preservation.

Then I realized that I am living in days prophesied of too. I can either be one of the faithful followers of Christ, prepared for his second coming, or one that apostasizes and falls away. I know these are the days prophesied of long ago. I have no doubt of it. May I remain strong and faithful.

Day 1942

Wednesday, July 22, 2020

Today's Favorite Verse: 3 Nephi 4:4, 18

Today's Favorite Verse: 3 Nephi 4:4, 18
"Therefore, there was no chance for the robbers to plunder and to obtain food, save it were to come up in open battle against the Nephites; and the Nephites being in one body, and having so great a number, and having reserved for themselves provisions, and horses and cattle, and flocks of every kind, that they might subsist for the space of seven years, in the which time they did hope to destroy the robbers from off the face of the land; and thus the eighteenth year did pass away.
But behold, this was an advantage to the Nephites; for it was impossible for the robbers to lay siege sufficiently long to have any effect upon the Nephites, because of their much provision which they had laid up in store,"

This made me think about the importance of food storage. How quickly the Nephites had to gather together to defend themselves against the Gadianton robbers. In order to have seven years of provisions they would have needed to have stores put aside in advance. It made me think of their food preservation options compared to our canned goods, pressure canning, dehydrating and vacuum sealing options which they wouldn't have had access to. What skills we must have lost compared to them.

I noticed they had provisions for seven years, but in reality they were only under siege for half that time. What a peace of mind this must have given them to know they could outlast their enemies. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has for many decades told us to be prepared and set food aside. During this pandemic I am grateful that I followed this council, but I know I could have never lasted seven years. I am grateful that the church has often suggested a three month storage and that is do-able. I have noticed an amazing thing during the shortages, as my supplies dwindled it wasn't until I was down to my last item before I could finally find it in stock again. I know the Lord has watched out for us as we have been faithful to the council given, and done the best we could do. It has brought much peace in a difficult time.

I belong to several Facebook groups that focus on preserving food and having a food storage. What a joy it is to see the renewed interest in preparedness, and seeing the wisdom in setting some stores aside. The resources the church has put out are spoken highly of by many not of our faith. It just really feels good to see that these efforts are blessing others in becoming more self-reliant.

Day 1941

Tuesday, July 21, 2020

Today's Favorite Verse: 3 Nephi 3:19, 25

Today's Favorite Verse: 3 Nephi 3:19, 25
"Now it was the custom among the Nephites to appoint for their chief captains, (save it were in their times of wickedness) some one that had the spirit of revelation and also prophecy; therefore, this Gidgiddoni was a great prophet among them, as also was the chief judge.
And they did fortify themselves against their enemies; and they did dwell in one land, and in one body, and they did fear the words which had been spoken by Lachoneus, insomuch that they did repent of their sins; and they did put up their prayers unto the Lord their God, that he would deliver them in the time that their enemies should come down against them to battle."

I pondered on the effect of having righteous leaders. He had the ability to receive revelation and plan for their defence, motive the people to come together, and most importantly have them repent. For no battle would be won against an enemy that sought to destroy them, if they were not a righteous people. I pondered on what drew their nation together, they were no longer separate Lamanites and Nephites, for they were united in defending themselves against the Gadianton robbers. These were terrible times, but yet good because the people did repent. I can imagine that brought peace to their hearts as they prepared to stand against their enemy. Having such a leader must have been such a source of strength to them, until they were spiritually strong enough to rely on the Lord.

Day 1940

Monday, July 20, 2020

Today's Favorite Verse: 3 Nephi 2:1-3

Today's Favorite Verse: 3 Nephi 2:1-3
"And it came to pass that thus passed away the ninety and fifth year also, and the people began to forget those signs and wonders which they had heard, and began to be less and less astonished at a sign or a wonder from heaven, insomuch that they began to be hard in their hearts, and blind in their minds, and began to disbelieve all which they had heard and seen -
Imagining up some vain thing in their hearts, that it was wrought by men and by the power of the devil, to lead away and deceive the hearts of the people; and thus by Satan get possession of the hearts of the people again, insomuch that he did blind their eyes and lead them away to believe that the doctrine of Christ was a foolish and a vain thing.
And it came to pass that the people began to wax strong in wickedness and abominations; and they did not believe that there should be any more signs or wonders given; and Satan did go about, leading away the hearts of the people, tempting them and causing them that they should do great wickedness in the land."

In contrast to these verses I thought about what President Nelson recently said an General Conference.

"We live in the day that “our forefathers have awaited with anxious expectation.” We have front-row seats to witness live what the prophet Nephi saw only in vision, that “the power of the Lamb of God” would descend “upon the covenant people of the Lord, who were scattered upon all the face of the earth; and they were armed with righteousness and with the power of God in great glory.”
You, my brothers and sisters, are among those men, women, and children whom Nephi saw. Think of that!
Regardless of where you live or what your circumstances are, the Lord Jesus Christ is your Savior, and God’s prophet Joseph Smith is your prophet. He was foreordained before the foundation of the earth to be the prophet of this last dispensation, when “nothing shall be withheld” from the Saints. Revelation continues to flow from the Lord during this ongoing process of restoration."
(Russell M. Nelson, "Hear Him", April 2020, General Conference)

...and also this.

"Our Savior and Redeemer, Jesus Christ, will perform some of His mightiest works between now and when He comes again. We will see miraculous indications that God the Father and His Son, Jesus Christ, preside over this Church in majesty and glory. But in coming days, it will not be possible to survive spiritually without the guiding, directing, comforting, and constant influence of the Holy Ghost."
Russell M. Nelson, "Revelation for the Church, Revelation for Our Lives", April 2018, General Conference)

I sat and pondered on what has been happening this year. As a family we have remarked that as we follow the "Come, Follow Me" schedule and read the Book of Mormon how much we find applying to our day. So what is this pandemic? I would have to guess it's a voice of warning. What is the warning? Maybe so we don't begin to practice imagining vain things in our hearts, become spiritual blind and dismiss the purpose of what we are to be learning through all this. How careful we have to be to not be deceived and lead away by the power of the devil. We have to be so careful about what sides we are joining. Probably best to join no sides and just side with the Lord and his prophets.

If Satan can blind people in a short 9 years after the sign was given of the birth of Christ, have them dismiss it and not believe, how much more powerful must he be right now to blind people to the truth of what is happening around them. How much more prepared will they be to deny the marvelous works that are to come?

Day 1939

Sunday, July 19, 2020

Today's Favorite Verse: 3 Nephi 1:29

Today's Favorite Verse: 3 Nephi 1:29
"And there was also a cause of much sorrow among the Lamanites; for behold, they had many children who did grow up and began to wax strong in years, that they became for themselves, and were led away by some who where Zoramites, by their lyings and their flattering words, to join those Gadianton robbers.
And thus were the Lamanites afflicted also, and began to decrease as to their faith and righteousness, because of the wickedness of the rising generation."

This chapter holds so much in the space of 4 years. They see signs and wonders increase as the time of Christ's birth approaches. The wicked plan to slay the righteous because the sign of Christ's birth hadn't appeared. It really did test the faith of the believers. The night of Christ's birth does arrive and some believe and others try to lie and deceive others on its meaning. Then they had to face those of the faith that wrested the scriptures and had to be corrected. After all this they face the rising generation being led away. All at the very time they knew Christ had been born into the world and it would not be many years before his death and resurrection and visitation to them. Those alive at that time, especially the rising generation would be there when it all happens.

Who are the Zoramites?  When I read Alma 31 that speaks of them they are apostates, that eventually joined the Lamanites. They have a false concept of election, errors in doctrine, and bowed down to idols. They had built unusual synagogues and worshiped in a manner never beheld before, with set prayers upon the Rameumptom stand. After all gave the same self prayer they return to their homes never speaking of their God again. They were a prideful and boastful people, wearing costly apparel. They refused entry of the poor to worship with them.

The only way I can picture them is to think of college universities with Zoramites among their professors. In their position they gain the ears of the rising generation and pervert their ways. It is by the false teachings and indoctrination of the youth that the parents become corrupted too. This is the only way I can picture it because that is what has happened in our society, and continues to happen.

Now I am observing parents today struggling with decisions on the safest way to educate their children during the pandemic. I believe the Lord has a plan and is guiding many of them to homeschool their children. The decision maybe because of the coronavirus, but in the end it just might save the children from indoctrination by corrupt teachers once this is over. Parents will learn to be more watchful and careful about their children's education and what they are being taught and by whom.

Day 1938

Saturday, July 18, 2020

Today's Favorite Verse: Helaman 16:19-20, 22

Today's Favorite Verse: Helaman 16:19-20, 22
"Yea, why will he not show himself in this land as well as in the land of Jerusalem?
But behold, we know that this is a wicked tradition, which has been handed down unto us by our fathers, to cause us that we shall believe in some great and marvelous thing which should come to pass, but not among us, but in a land which is far distant, a land which we know not; therefore they can keep us in ignorance, for we cannot witness with our own eyes that they are true.
And many more things did the people imagine up in their hearts, which were foolish and vain; and they were much disturbed, for Satan did stir them up to do iniquity continually; yea, he did go about spreading rumors and contentions upon all the face of the land, that he might harden the hearts of the people against that which was good and against that which should come."

What really struck me was how the people that didn't believe in Christ spoke as if it was a fact and true that Christ wouldn't appear to them. They had already worked up in their minds that it was a convenient lie his followers told, because there was no way it could be proven when he came because they wouldn't see it.

Instead what this absolutely shows is they did not know the scriptures. For it had been prophesied among them that Christ would appear. In 1 Nephi 12 it tells of Nephi's vision of the land of promise and Christ appearing to them. He even tells of the mist of darkness, lightening, thundering, earthquakes, cities sunk and burned because of the great and terrible judgments that will come upon them when he came.

"And I saw the heavens open, and the Lamb of God descending out of heaven; and he came down and showed himself unto them." (1 Nephi 12:6)

So the disbelievers were upset because they understood a lie that someone told them. They didn't search the scriptures for themselves. They only listened to the interpretations of others. They were the ones that believed rumors and spread them, causing contention in the land. You can see how they "imagine up in their hearts...many foolish and vain things". Satan was the author of all these rumors that spread contention in the land, and they were his helpers. Wow, are there lessons for our day in this. It emphases the need to read and understand the scriptures for ourselves so we are not deceived. We must research what others tell us to prevent the spreading of rumors that cause contention. We need to not just take the word of someone else, but know as a fact that something is true. I think one of the biggest take away's is asking ourselves what rumors may I be spreading that help to cause contention in the land. Healing cannot begin unless contention stops. The biggest issue with participating in the spreading of lies is the spirit soon ceases to remain with you. Those that participate and don't repent are destroyed at the Savior's coming.

Day 1937

Friday, July 17, 2020

Today's Favorite Verse: Helaman 15:14

Today's Favorite Verse: Helaman 15:14
"Therefore I say unto you, it shall be better for them than for you except ye repent."

Samuel the Lamanite may have been speaking to the Nephites, warning them that if they did not repent they would be destroyed. For the Lamanites after putting aside the false traditions of their fathers and being fully converted were more faithful to the gospel. The Lord is warning them that he's going to clean house if the Nephites don't repent.

I pondered on how the same type of thing happens in our day. That we can never get complacent in the gospel and allow it to become our culture instead of our faith. To be raised in the church is a good thing, but we can never take for granted that we have fully been converted. All of us need to be converts to the church of Jesus Christ. We don't inherit our testimonies, each of us has to obtain it for ourselves and make it grow.

Day 1936

Thursday, July 16, 2020

Today's Favorite Verse: Helaman 14:30

Today's Favorite Verse: Helaman 14:30
"And now remember, remember, my brethren, that whosoever perisheth, perisheth unto himself; and whosoever doeth iniquity, doeth it unto himself; for behold, ye are free; ye are permitted to act for yourselves; for behold, God hath given unto you a knowledge and he hath made you free."

This made me ponder on the light of Christ, free agency, and consequences of our choices. At some point we have to be honest with ourselves and accept responsibility for our actions. Free agency is given but we alone must face the consequences of those choices. Lying to ourselves, placing blame on others, won't remove us from our guilt. The biggest lie in that case is to ourselves, thinking it somehow did.  It really is quite a blessing to be able to acknowledge our faults, and to be able to repent of them and grow, instead of when we stand before the Lord where lying just won't work. No matter what anyone else around us has done, or taught us, in the end the decision is ours alone to make. The light of Christ is a gift given to all which tell us right from wrong. That is having knowledge. We alone are held accountable for our choices.

"Wherefore, we shall have a perfect knowledge of all our guilt, and our uncleanness, and our nakedness; and the righteous shall have perfect knowledge of their enjoyment, and their righteousness, being clothed with purity, yea, even with the robe of righteousness."
(2 Nephi 9:14)

Day 1935

Wednesday, July 15, 2020

Today's Favorite Verse: Helaman 13:29

Today's Favorite Verse: Helaman 13:29
"O ye wicked and ye perverse generation; ye hardened and ye stiffnecked people, how long will ye suppose that the Lord will suffer you? Yea, how long will ye suffer yourselves to be led by foolish and blind guides?  Yea, how long will ye choose darkness rather than light?"

This verse stood out to me because of two separate conversations I had today. What it all brought to my remembrance is how grateful I am that I listened to the spirit when I first began to read the scriptures daily. The spirit told me to read the scriptures and not books about the scriptures. I am grateful I listened because if I had not I think I would have veered and started to read books that wrested the scriptures and took me down the wrong path. For this is exactly where I see some are headed for they are listening to foolish and blind guides. It just breaks my heart. I am grateful for what the spirit teaches me when I am ready. I have had to learn patience in not understanding, and knowing there is a reason. Then when I am ready understanding comes with the right light of personal revelation. I have come to learn that whatever the spirit teaches me is not an original thought. I will then find a second or third witness through the teachings of the prophets and the apostles, and other scriptures. They are never foolish or blind guides.

Day 1934

Tuesday, July 14, 2020

Today's Favorite Verse: Helaman 12:21-22

Today's Favorite Verse: Helaman 12:21-22
"And if the Lord shall say - Because of thine iniquities thou shalt be cut off from my presence - he will cause that it shall be so.
And wo unto him to whom he shall say this, for it shall be unto him that will do iniquity, and he cannot be saved; therefore, for this cause, that men might be saved, hath repentance been declared."

When I read this verse until the end of the chapter I just wept. I was able to ponder on all that my Savior has done for me. I am so grateful for His atoning sacrifice, and the gift of repentance that it brings. He is my rock and my comfort. I am grateful that Father prepared the way so I can grown and learn from my mistakes. That through my Savior the slate can be wiped clean. How many times have I had to do that? I don't know, and it really doesn't matter, because that is what the gift is for. It is the best gift anyone has ever given me, and the more I use it the more precious it becomes to me.

Day 1933

Monday, July 13, 2020

Today's Favorite Verse: Helaman 11:7, 34, 37

Today's Favorite Verse: Helaman 11:7, 34, 37
"And it came to pass that the people saw that they were about to perish by famine, and they began to remember the Lord their God; and they began to remember the words of Nephi.
Now this great evil, which came unto the people because of their iniquity, did stir them up again in remembrance of the Lord their God.
And it came to pass in the eighty and fifth year they did wax stronger and stronger in their pride, and in their wickedness; and thus they were ripening again for destruction."

In this chapter the people experience contentions and wars amongst themselves. Nephi prays that instead of perishing by the sword that there be a famine. Hearts are softened as they being to perish by famine. They repent for a time. Then they begin to content concerning points of doctrine. That the brethren preach true points of doctrine to them.  After that they have dissenters that "search out all the secret plans of Gadianton; and thus they became robbers of Gadianton." (verse 26) Then there are battles while trying to destroy the Gadianton robbers. Through all this the people are stirred up in remembrance of their God. But, it doesn't last, they again turn to their pride and wickedness and are ripe for destruction. It's a pretty sad chapter to see that they just don't learn that to be righteous brings peace and blessings upon the land.

The people then are no different than the people today. I remember when 911 happened and how people prayed and came together and we cherished each other for a moment. Then in a matter of a few short years we just grew more wicked and a perverse people. We are in the same cycle that the Nephites are going through. Sadly, it appears with this world wide pandemic, and the civil unrest's happening that few appear to be turning their hearts to God. That made me think instead of those that were righteous how did they fair? Then I recall Nephi and his brother Lehi are faithful. In verse 23 it even mentions those that "knew concerning the true points of doctrine, having many revelations daily". So on one hand there are very wicked people, and on the other there are humble followers of Christ that are receiving revelation daily. All was not dark depending on what side you were on.

Today's Favorite Verse: Helaman 10:4-5

Today's Favorite Verse: Helaman 10:4-5
"Blessed art thou, Nephi, for those things which thou hast done; for I have beheld how thou hast with unwearyingness declared the word, which I have given unto thee, unto this people. And thou hast not feared them, and hast not sought thine own life, but hast sought my will, and to keep my commandments.
And now, because thou hast done this with such unwearyingness, behold, I will bless thee forever; and I will make thee mighty in word and in deed, in faith and in works; yea, even that all things shall be done unto thee according to thy word, for thou shalt not ask that which is contrary to my will."

In this chapter while returning to his home Nephi ponders all that has taken place, and is "much cast down" because of the wickness of the people. That is when the voice of the Lord came to him. He is then given the sealing power over the people, to smite the earth with famine, pestilence, and destruction according to the wickness of the people. Then he is told to declare to the people that "thus saith the Lord God, who is the Almighty: Except ye repent ye shall be smitten, even unto destruction."

This is an amazing power the God has given Nephi. Why does he do this?  Because he knew Nephi's heart and that he would not abuse the power given him. That he has sought God's will and not his own and would not ask contrary to His will. That is faithfulness, and obedience. Next to my Savior, I think Nephi is a wonderful example of seeking the Father's will. I want to be like that.

Today's Favorite Verse: Helaman 9:21-22

Today's Favorite Verse: Helaman 9:21-22
"But Nephi said unto them: O ye fools, ye uncircumcised of heart, ye blind, and ye stiffnecked people, do ye know how long the Lord your God will suffer you that ye shall go in this your way of sin?
O ye ought to begin to howl and mourn, because of the great destruction which at this time doth await you, except ye shall repent."

When I read this I could imagine Nephi saying this same thing to us today, especially if he read some comments made about the Utah Area Presidency's letter yesterday. Who would have thought a sifting would come to the saints over the simplicity of wearing a mask? Greater things are at stake here.

During family scripture study we were reading Alma 32 and these verses stood out to me.

"Behold I say unto you, do ye suppose that ye cannot worship God save it be in your synagogues only?
I say unto you, it is well that ye are cast out of your synagogues, that ye may be humble, and that ye may learn wisdom; for it is necessary that ye should learn wisdom; for it is because that ye are despised of your brethren because of your exceeding poverty, that ye are brought to a lowliness of heart; for ye are necessarily brought to be humble."
(Alma 32:10, 12)

The one word I would change is poverty to pride. It is because of the pride of the saints I wonder how long it will be before we are once again turned away from meeting at church. We still are not ready as a people to return to our temples. These are the days were we acquire much lowliness of heart, become humble and learn much wisdom. Putting our trust in the Lord and not in the arm of flesh by showing our obedience.

Today's Favorite Verse: Helaman 8:4, 10

Today's Favorite Verse: Helaman 8:4, 10
"And those judges were angry with him because he spake plainly unto them concerning their secret works of darkness; nevertheless, they durst not lay their own hands upon him, for they feared the people lest they should cry out against them.
And it came to pass that those people who sought to destroy Nephi were compelled because of their fear, that they did not lay their hands on him; therefore he began again to speak unto them, seeing that he had gained favor in the eyes of some, insomuch that the remainder of them did fear."

The judges wanted to destroy Nephi because he was exposing their secret works. They couldn't do it openly so instead they tried to incite the people in wanting to destroy him with a whisper campaign. It made me think of something I read today. This news personality told the story of someone being harassed, and in turn he was trying to expose their attacker. The odd thing was when I read the story and looked at the pictures the person he was trying to incite people against didn't look like the same man. So many features were not the same. Yet, here was someone trying to incite people against him. The comments were terrible, they were condemning the man that was supposedly harassing another person. I just shook my head and stopped reading the comments. I could see what this person was doing. He was doing exactly what he was accusing the other person and trying to get people to do his dirty work. Now with what is happening to Nephi I see a parallel between them. It reminds me that I need to be extremely careful about who I listen and never judge until I know all the facts. People have motives for twisting the facts and compelling others to do wrong.

Day 1929

Today's Favorite Verse: Helaman 7:3, 6, 9

Today's Favorite Verse: Helaman 7:3, 6, 9
"And they did reject all his words, insomuch that he could not stay among them, but returned again unto the land of his nativity.
Now this great iniquity had come upon the Nephites, in the space of not many years; and when Nephi saw it, his heart was swollen with sorrow within his breast; and he did exclaim in the agony of his soul.
But behold, I am consigned that these are my days, and that my soul shall be filled with sorrow because of this the wickedness of my brethren."

I love Nephi, son of Helaman, and I am looking for qualities or characteristics that made him the man of God that he was. When it mentions that "great iniquity had come upon the Nephites, in the space of not many years", I wondered how long was that? The footnote tells me it was only six years. A lot happened in just six years. Seeing the wickedness of the people caused his heart to be swollen with sorrow within his breast. He tried to preach the gospel to them, because he knew that was all that could save them from themselves right now. He is rejected and returns home. There he goes upon the tower in his garden and prays for them, but doesn't realize the people have gathered and heard him. As I ponder on this great sorrow he had I can only imagine how heart felt and powerful a prayer that must have been for people to overhear. Especially when you are consigning yourself that you are powerless to do more for them, so you mourn for them. Would they not have known his love and concern for his brethren. That must have been an incredible mighty, yet truly heartfelt and humble prayer he offered to God.

The quality I take from this is he must have possessed a lot of charity and compassion for others to mourn for them. He actually never gave up on them, he continued to pray for them. I know there are some people that I need to include in my prayers. This reminds me of a story of a bedridden women that was incapable of doing anything and felt worthless. Until she realized what she could do is pray for others, and it filled her life with the joy of service. There is always something we can do, and that is to pray.

Day 1928

Today's Favorite Verse: Helaman 6:35-36

Today's Favorite Verse: Helaman 6:35-36
"And thus we see that the Spirit of the Lord began to withdraw from the Nephites, because of the wickedness and the hardness of their hearts.
And thus we see that the Lord began to pour out his Spirit upon the Lamanites, because of their easiness and willingness to believe in his words."

Lately, I've had a reoccurring theme, to not go to far to the right or the left, but to head down the middle. Staying between all the divisions happening between people right now. This is also good spiritual advice, to stay in the main stream of the church. This does not mean sitting on the fence in gray areas on subjects, because that is just inviting how far can I go before I fall. Instead I mean to not be distracted by the noise coming from opposite sides. Instead I am to follow that straight and narrow path the Lord has set, and it will keep me from danger. From observing, I am now seeing how both sides have valid points, but can also twist things to fit their agenda. I cannot put into words what I am learning, but I'm totally ok with it not having a name. It's one of those watch and be mindful things. It will all make sense later.

I've also seen those I listened to in the past falling to far to the right or the left and are now off neutral ground. I started to clean out the Facebook groups and YouTube channels that I follow and have been surprised when I revisit them how many people and groups have morphed into something that leaves me feeling uncomfortable.

In this chapter I see how the Nephites that were once righteous have now turned wicked. At the same time the Lamanites who were wicked have become righteous. It made me ponder on how a once righteous Nephite if he insisted on blinding following someone he has put on a pedal stool, never questioning where the person was headed, they just might follow them right out of the church. It really is a good thing to step back without having all the answers and just observe where people are headed and change course direction before it is to late. If you do not have the spirit as your guide you really can go off into strange roads and get lost.

Day 1927

Today's Favorite Verse: Helaman 5:12

Today's Favorite Verse: Helaman 5:12
"And now, my sons, remember, remember that it is upon the rock of our Redeemer, who is Christ, the Son of God, that ye must build your foundation; that when the devil shall send forth his mighty winds, yea, his shafts in the whirlwind, yea, when all his hail and his mighty storm shall beat upon you, it shall have no power over you to drag you down to the gulf of misery and endless wo, because of the rock upon which ye are built, which is a sure foundation, a foundation whereon if men build they cannot fall."

This chapter takes place 30 years before the sign of Jesus Christ's birth appears to the people in the American continent. When I read this chapter I think of the following quote from President Russell M. Nelson.

"Our Savior and Redeemer, Jesus Christ, will perform some of His mightiest works between now and when He comes again. We will see miraculous indications that God the Father and His Son, Jesus Christ, preside over this Church in majesty and glory."
(Russell M. Nelson, "Revelation for the Church, Revelation for our Lives", April 2019 General Conference)

It is at this time, leading up to the Savior's birth, that marvelous miracles happen. The conversion of 300 souls after seeing Nephi and Lehi surrounded by a pillar of fire, hearing the voice of the Lord, being surrounded themselves by pillars of fires and converting fits with what I believe we will see coming. I think Nephi, son of Nephi is my favorite person in the whole Book of Mormon. I love his faith and dedication to the Lord. If I had to guess where we are in the time frame leading up to the second coming, I would say right about here. We haven't reached this yet but it's just around the corner.

I looked for what made Nephi and Lehi so faithful. I think its because they took the counsel of their father Nephi to heart. They did exactly as he told them. They built their foundation in Christ. That is why they never shook or faltered. That is why miracles could happen. That is exactly what we need to do.

Day 1926

Today's Favorite Verse: Helaman 4:23-24

Today's Favorite Verse: Helaman 4:23-24
"And because of their iniquity the church had begun to dwindle; and they began to disbelieve in the spirit of prophecy and in the spirit of revelation; and the judgments of God did stare them in the face.
And they saw that they had become weak, like unto their brethren, the Lamanites, and that the Spirit of the Lord did no more preserve them; yea, it had withdrawn from them because the Spirit of the Lord doth not dwell in unholy temples."

So much in this chapter to ponder on. One thought I had earlier was if it wasn't for the dissenters from the Nephites the Lamanites would have long ago forgotten their hatred of them. The traditions of their fathers was used by the dissenters to stir up the Lamanites against the Nephites. The Nephites at that time had nothing to do with the decisions made hundred of years prior. Neither had any living Lamanite suffered loss because of it. For hundred of years they had separate lands, kings and governments. History was being distorted. I think we see that tactic being used today.

In the verses I chose I was suddenly struck with the thought that our temples have been closed. They are only available on a limited bases for temple sealings for endowments couples. I thought of some recent stories in the news and how a few that were morally and spiritually unclean used them. So much has been exposed since the temple closings. In the context of these happenings several conference talks now make a lot more sense on the warnings given. I had often thought it would be nice to have all the temple rededicated when they officially reopen. Maybe instead the waiting period is for us to rededicate ourselves. Then I realized, I don't have to wait for anything official. I can rededicate myself and make sure I am clean when I go again.

Then I thought of President Nelson and his emphases on having the spirit and receiving personal revelation. We have recently been told this multiple times by the prophet and apostles. Maybe this emphases wasn't just because we needed it, but because some saints were loosing it. I hadn't thought about that, because I only know what's happening to me. Are we not now staring a lot of things in the face! There is much to ponder on in this chapter. Lots of warnings for the saints from prophets past and present.

Day 1925

Today's Favorite Verse: Helaman 3:33-35

Today's Favorite Verse: Helaman 3:33-35
"And in the fifty and first year of the reign of the judges there was a peace also, save it were the pride which began to enter into the church - not into the church of God, but into the hearts of the people who professed to belong to the church of God -
And they were lifted up in pride, even to the persecution of many of their brethren. Now this was a great evil, which did cause the more humble part of the people to suffer great persecutions, and to wade through much affliction.
Nevertheless they did fast and pray oft, and did wax stronger and stronger in their humility, and firmer and firmer in the faith of Christ, unto the filling their souls with joy and consolation, yea, even to the purifying and the sanctification of their hearts, which sanctification cometh because of their yielding their hearts unto God."

I like how Mormon said "the people who professed to belong to the church of God." These individuals were full of pride, which caused them to persecute those that were humble. I am reminded that there are two churches only, the church of God and the church of the devil. It is entirely possible to be a member of the true and living church, but your membership lies in the church of the devil, simply because of where your heart is. It is sad the damage people can do when they profess to belong to the church and then are a very bad example of what the faith is all about.

Yet, in this we see the saints that are persecuted by fellow members are made more prayerful, humble and faithful. They turn to God and are purified and sanctified. It is an example of "..all these things shall give thee experience, and shall be for thy good." (Doctrine and Covenants 122:7)

I had these notes on the verses. It is powerful to think of what the humble followers of Christ came to understand from all that they passed through.

"The Saints of Helaman’s day continued in good works and became stronger in spiritual qualities, which in turn resulted in sanctification. Elder D. Todd Christofferson explained that sanctification is a step in the path of striving toward perfection: “Personal persistence in the path of obedience is something different than achieving perfection in mortality. Perfection is not, as some suppose, a prerequisite for justification and sanctification. It is just the opposite: justification (being pardoned) and sanctification (being purified) are the prerequisites for perfection. We only become perfect ‘in Christ’ (see Moro. 10:32), not independently of Him. Thus, what is required of us in order to obtain mercy in the day of judgment is simple diligence” (“Justification and Sanctification,” Ensign, June 2001, 24–25).

The development of humility is a strengthening factor that leads to greater faith and joy in the lives of faithful Church members then and now.
“To be humble is to recognize gratefully your dependence on the Lord—to understand that you have constant need for His support. Humility is an acknowledgment that your talents and abilities are gifts from God. It is not a sign of weakness, timidity, or fear; it is an indication that you know where your true strength lies. You can be both humble and fearless. You can be both humble and courageous. …
“The Lord will strengthen you as you humble yourself before Him” (True to the Faith: A Gospel Reference [2004], 86).

Day 1924

Today's Favorite Verse: Helaman 2:4-5, 13

Today's Favorite Verse: Helaman 2:4-5, 13
"For there was one Gadianton, who was exceedingly expert in many words, and also in his craft, to carry on the secret work of murder and of robbery; therefore he became the leader of the band of Kishkumen.
Therefore he did flatter them, and also Kishumen, that if they would place him in the judgment-seat he would grant unto those who belonged to his band that they should be placed in power and authority among the people; therefore Kishkumen sought to destroy Helaman.
And behold, in the end of this book ye shall see that this Gadianton did prove the overthrow, yea, almost the entire destruction of the people of Nephi."

The object of the followers of Gadianton is to murder, rob, and gain power. It doesn't take much imagination to feel we have Gadianton robbers inside our government. Helaman as chief-judge did try to root them out, and execute them according to law, but they escaped into the wilderness. This was just the beginning of their secret band. First, it was the very wicked that joined them. Eventually, they were able to overthrow the government because those that were once righteous were seduced into going along with them. As I participated in my annual 4th of July tradition of watching "A More Perfect Union" today, I thought about how much we have strayed. I think the righteous have been seduced by "what's in it for me".

Day 1923

Today's Favorite Verse: Helaman 1:18, 31

Today's Favorite Verse: Helaman 1:18, 31
"And it came to pass that because of so much contention and so much difficulty in the government, that they had not kept sufficient guards in the land of Zarahemla; for they had supposed that the Lamanites durst not come into the heart of their lands to attack that great city Zarahemla.
And now, behold, the Lamanites could not retreat either way, neither on the north, nor on the south, nor on the east, nor on the west, for they were surrounded on every hand by the Nephites"

This is a very interesting chapter. Pahoran the chief judge dies. Three of his sons contend for the judgment-seat. One son is elected by the voice of the people and another son united with their voice. But, the third son and his followers got mad and tried to overthrow the government. He was tried and condemned to death. Which then his followers go totally out of control and by the use of secret combinations kill the brother that is on the judgment seat. Seriously, I wonder on their rational because the rebellious brother is already condemned to death. Another example of people not thinking past the end of their noses.

The remaining brother is now appointed chief judge by the voice of the people. You would think things would settle down but instead their enemy the Lamanites find it the perfect time to attack them. This time they go for the heart of the land which is Zarahelma. Once there they kill the last brother. At first I am puzzled at how the Lamanites got to the center of the Nephite land when there were guards protecting their borders. I finally found out how, "their march was with such exceedingly great speed that there was no time for the Nephites to gather together their armies." (Helaman 1:19) Then they "cut down the watch by the entrance of the city" (verse 20), They then "did march forth, giving them no time to assemble themselves together save it were in small bodies" (verse 24).

It doesn't take long for the army that is guarding the borders to head off the Lamanites from taking any more land. The Lamanites are finally defeated, but the cost was great. So now I try to apply this to my day, not so hard to do in a presidential election year with a pandemic, protests and lots of chaos going around. This is a perfect time for an enemy to attack us. But, instead what comes to mind is a quote from President Russell M. Nelson given a little over two years ago.

"In coming days, it will not be possible to survive spiritually without the guiding, directing, comforting, and constant influence of the Holy Ghost."
(President Russell M. Nelson, "Revelation for the Church, Revelation for Our Lives", April 2018 General Conference)

I think about the distractions that are all around me right now and if I am not careful the enemy (Satan) can attack me from within. To cut off the watch would mean I have reached a point that the spirit is no longer my guide. If I become to distracted by the contention and cares of the world all around me, I could think I am the one looking past the end of my nose, but in reality I have let my guard down and don't see what is on the north, south, east and west surrounding me. I have lost the warning voice of spiritual danger approaching. So in times like this I need to be a wise and not a foolish virgin with plenty of oil in my lamp, and never let it go out.

Until the forces could gather together the people were left on their own. It was only in small bodies that any fight could be made against this adversary. The parallel of us gathering in our homes in small bodies is not lost on me. For this has been my refuge from the storm. Studying the scriptures in our home has been such a source of peace, comfort and blessing, and kept the oil filled in my lamp. As President Nelson warned us, to survive the coming days the spiritual preparation had to be made in advance. If a course correction is needed now is the time to make it, I am sure there a bigger battles still ahead.

Today's Favorite Verse: Alma 63:10-11

Today's Favorite Verse: Alma 63:10-11
"And it came to pass in the thirty and ninth year of the reign of the judges, Shiblon died also, and Corianton had gone forth to the land northward in a ship, to carry forth provisions unto the people who had gone forth into that land.
Therefore it became expedient for Shiblon to confer those sacred things, before his death, upon the son of Helaman, who was called Helaman, being called after the name of his father."

In this chapter it speaks of the death of Moroni, and the sons of Alma the younger, Helaman and Shiblon. It also speaks of the people that were building ships and traveling northward. I had totally missed earlier that Alma's son Corianton was one of them traveling northward in a ship. Because he was gone the sacred records did not pass to him. It appears that Alma had wanted all his sons to write upon the plates in their turn. Instead his grandson Helaman, son of Helaman, now has the records. What a strong and blessed posterity Alma the younger had. The importance of the scriptures must have played a big role in that.

Day 1921

Today's Favorite Verse: Alma 62:40-41

Today's Favorite Verse: Alma 62:40-41
"And there had been murders, and contentions, and dissensions, and all manner of iniquity among the people of Nephi; neverthless for the righteous' sake, yea, because of the prayers of the righteous, they were spared.
But behold, because of the exceedingly great length of the war between the Nephites and the Lamanites many had become hardened, because of the exceedingly great length of the war; and many were softened because of their afflictions, insomuch that they did humble themselves before God, even in the depth of humility."

The chapter tells the end of the war for now between the Nephites, Lamanites, freeman, and kingman. It is through the prayers of the righteous that the Nephites were spared. Now the people had to recover from what they went through. Did the experience they passed through soften or harden their hearts?  This is totally a personal matter on how they individually withstood all that they went through. It is much like us right now. Are our hearts softening or hardening?  Have we humbled ourselves and turned to the Lord or turned away? Our battle is only months old, so recognizing what path we are on could allow a very important course correction before we spiral out of control. Inquiring, "Lord is it I?", is a very good place to start.

Day 1920
