Today's Favorite Verse: Proverbs 18:13, 15

Today's Favorite Verse: Proverbs 18:13, 15
"He that answereth a matter before he heareth it, it is folly and shame unto him.
The heart of the prudent getteth knowledge; and the ear of the wise seeketh knowledge."

Coming to a conclusion before we have all the facts is folly and will bring shame. It is so important, especially in the times we live in, to make sure we have truth. Seeking knowledge and truth is vital.

"But, behold, I say unto you, that you must study it out in your mind; then you must ask me if it be right, and if it is right I will cause that your bosom shall burn within you; therefore, you shall feel that it is right."
(Doctrine and Covenants 9:8)

If we are to walk with the spirit always to be with us we must study things out in our minds before the spirit can guide us in if it be truth or error.

Today's Favorite Verse: Doctrine & Covenants 100:11

Today's Favorite Verse: Doctrine & Covenants 100:11
"And I will give unto thee power to be mighty in expounding all scriptures, that thou mayest be a spokesman unto him, and he shall be a revelator unto thee, that thou mayest know the certainty of all things pertaining to the things of my kingdom on the earth."

The power to expound all scriptures made me think of Bruce R. McConkie and his role in helping to develop the 1979/1981 edition of the Latter-day Saint Bible, Book of Mormon and Doctrine and Covenants. With his inspired understanding of the scriptures he was able to write all the chapter headings. How I depend on them. This made me find the BYUtv show "That Promised Day: The Coming Forth of the LDS Scriptures". The Lord truly put in place the right people able to make the scriptures "one in thine hand".

"Moreover, thou son of man, take thee one stick, and write upon it, For Judah, and for the children of Israel his companions: the take another stick, and write upon it, For Joseph, the stick of Ephram, and for all the house of Israel his companions.
And join them one to another into one stick; and they shall become one in thine hand"
(Ezekiel 37:16-17)

Then Elder Thomas S. Monson was a printer and understood page layout, format, styles and type. Elder Bruce R. McConkie was an expert on the doctrine. He oversaw the footnotes, chapter headings, JST, and dictionary. Elder Boyd K. Packer oversaw that it be affordable and able to be handled, he also oversaw the topical guide and concordance. The talents and gifts of these apostles and all the others involved in this undertaking were absolutely given power to be mighty in expounding all scriptures. I cannot image how much I would be lacking if I did not have ability to cross reference these scriptures to learn and study from them.

"Never since the day of Joseph Smith...has there been such an opportunity to increase gospel scholarship as has now come to those who have our new English editions of the scriptures"
(Elder Bruce R. McConkie)

"However talented men may be in administrative matters [or] worldly things - they will be denied the sweet whisperings of the spirit that might have been theirs unless they pay the price of studying, pondering, and praying about the scriptures."
(Elder Bruce R. McConkie)

Today's Favorite Verse: Luke 2:16

Today's Favorite Verse: Luke 2:16
"And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger."

I was drawn to the story of the shepherds, that heard the angels message and left with haste to Bethlehem to find the infant Jesus. I had a note for haste: with purpose, and not casually. I also had another note about casual feasting.

“If we are to survive the difficult times ahead, we need to move from casual feasting to urgent feasting upon the word of God. We need to make regular and focused scripture study a priority in our lives. If we do, I promise that we will not fear.”
(Matt Maxwell, "From Fear to Feasting", Jan 2019, Ensign)

I find this interesting because just the other day I said "I have felt such an urgency to learn that I am currently reading from the New Testament, Book of Mormon, and Doctrine and Covenants each day. I want to find time to add the Old Testament somehow too. That one takes so long to read all the way through, but its so important." In reflecting back on this I realized, with all the events going on in the world I have no fear, just peace. If you have fear right now I encourage you to start urgently feasting on the word of God. Feast on the scriptures, not books about the scriptures. The Gospel Library app or the Book of Mormon app are wonderful places to start.

Today's Favorite Verse: Nehemiah 5:7

Today's Favorite Verse: Nehemiah 5:7
"Then I consulted with myself, and I rebuked the nobles, and the rulers, and said unto them, Ye exact usury, every one of his brother. And I set a great assembly against them."
I pondered on "I consulted with myself". How important doing that inner reflection is. How it is part of the study it out in your mind, and ask if it be right. When the spirit is our constant companion when we need to ponder and study what direction we should take, there is no doubt and you can move forward in faith and peace.
"But, behold, I say unto you, that you must study it out in your mind; then you must ask me if it be right, and if it is right I will cause that your bosom shall burn within you; therefore, you shall feel that it is right"
(Doctrine and Covenants 9:8)

Day: 2577

Today's Favorite Verse: 1 Samuel 23:9-11

Today's Favorite Verse: 1 Samuel 23:9-11
"And David knew that Saul secretly practised mischief against him; and he said to Abiathar the priest, Bring hither the ephod.
Then said David, O LORD God of Israel, thy servant hath certainly heard that Saul seeketh to come to Keilah, to destroy the city for my sake.
Will the men of Keilah deliver me up into his hand? will Saul come down, as thy servant hath heard? O LORD God of Israel, I beseech thee, tell thy servant. And the LORD said, He will come down."

As I'm reading this I'm thinking is sure sounds like David is having a question and answer session with the Lord. It reminded me of the Urim and Thummim that Joseph Smith, Jr. would use for translating and inquiring of the Lord. (see Joseph Smith History 1:35) David is receiving direction from God on where to go to keep away from Saul. I wondered if the ephod is a Urim and Thummim? I knew this priestly garment had precious stones in it but I never heard it called a Urim and Thummim. I checked the bible dictionary and this is what it says.

"Part of the dress of the high priest (Ex. 28:6, etc.), shaped like a waistcoat with two shoulder pieces and a girdle. It was of richly variegated material, blue, purple, and scarlet. On the shoulder pieces were two onyx stones on which were engraved the names of the 12 tribes. To the ephod was fastened the Breastplate of Judgment. An ephod of linen seems to have become the dress of all priests (1 Sam. 22:18). It was also worn by Samuel (1 Sam. 2:18) and by David when he brought up the Ark (2 Sam. 6:14). The ephod at one time became the object of idolatrous worship (Judg. 8:27; 17:5). The name may possibly in these last passages have been used to denote an image of some kind. See also Gideon."
(Bible Dictionary, Ephod)

So next question is "What is the breastplate of judgment". It sure reminds of how the Urim and Thummin fit into silver bows fastened to a breastplate so Joseph Smith could translate with it. I couldn't find anything on the church website regarding this breastplate of judgment. I had to turn to google, which I really don't like to do.

"The breastplate of Judgment also known as the priestly breastplate was a sacred breastplate worn by the the High Priest for the Israelites, according to the Book of Exodus. In the biblical account, the breastplate is termed the breastplate of judgment, because the Urim and Thummim, by which the High Priest checked the will of God in any important matter that would affect the nation, were placed within it (Exodus 28:15 )."
(Creation Wiki, Encyclopedia of Creation Science, Breastplate of judgment)

"The twelve precious stones with which the breastplate was decorated contained the names of the twelve tribes; each name being fully engraved on one stone, in order that, when the high priest came before Him, God might be mindful of the piety of the patriarchs... In addition to the names of the twelve tribes, the stones also contained, at the head, the names Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and at the end the words: ="tribes of God")....These words could not be omitted from the breastplate, since the whole Hebrew alphabet had to be included, in order that, on consulting the Urim and Thummim, the high priest might be enabled to form words from the different colors of the individual letters on the stones of the breastplate, and hence might be able to answer questions put to him."
(Jewish Encyclopedia, "Breastplate of the High Priest")

After reading this I did find more in the Bible Dictionary on the church website under Breastplate.

"(1) The front part of a soldier’s dress, worn for protection. In this sense Isaiah and Paul spoke of a “breastplate of righteousness,” which all saints should possess, protecting the vital organs against the evil things of life (Isa. 59:17; Eph. 6:14).
(2) The high priest in the law of Moses wore a breastplate as part of his sacred attire. This was called the “breastplate of judgment” (Ex. 28:13–30; 39:8–21). It was made of linen, very colorfully arranged, bearing 12 precious stones and the Urim and Thummim. Other references to a breastplate are found in 1 Thes. 5:8; Rev. 9:9; D&C 17:1; JS—H 1:35, 42, 52."

Now that I was headed in the right direction I found a lot more on the church website and spent more time reading various articles there. This piece of information was all very interesting to learn. I had always glossed over the colorful priestly attire. Didn't really understand all its significance. Now I will be more attentive when I see the ephod being mentioned. Does give me pause on how much I may have missed when I skip over things like this while reading. Studying the scriptures is a lifetime pursuit.

Day 2418

Today's Favorite Verse: Doctrine & Covenants 92:1

Today's Favorite Verse: Doctrine & Covenants 92:1

"Verily, thus saith the Lord, I give unto the united order, organized agreeable to the commandment previously given, a revelation and commandment concerning my servant Frederick G. Williams, that ye shall receive him into the order. What I say unto one I say unto all."

In this verse I focused on "What I say unto one I say unto all". It reminded me of my Pathway class on the Book of Mormon, and learning the study skill Substitution. This is where I insert my name in the scriptures and follow the pronouns. So where this verse says Frederick G. Williams, I would read it Renee M. Zamora. This was an easy concept to understand because of what Nephi had said earlier.

"And I did read many things unto them which were written in the books of Moses; but that I might more fully persuade them to believe in the Lord their Redeemer I did read unto them that which was written by the prophet Isaiah; for I did liken all scriptures unto us, that it might be for our profit and learning."
(1 Nephi 19:23)

Day 2095

Today's Favorite Verse: Doctrine & Covenants 26:1

 Today's Favorite Verse: Doctrine & Covenants 26:1

"Behold, I say unto you that you shall let your time be devoted to the studying of the scriptures, and to preaching, and to confirming the church at Colesville, and to performing your labors on the land, such as is required, until after you shall go to the west to hold the next conference; and then it shall be made known what you shall do."

I pondered on how reading and studying the scriptures is never wasted time. It makes us better prepared to work in the Lord's vineyard as we are needed.

Day 2029

Today's Favorite Verse: Doctrine & Covenants 8:2-3

 Today's Favorite Verse: Doctrine & Covenants 8:2-3

"Yea, behold, I will tell you in your mind and in your heart, by the Holy Ghost, which shall come upon you and which shall dwell in your heart.
Now behold, this is the spirit of revelation; behold, this is the spirit by which Moses brought the children of Israel through the Red Sea on dry ground."

I sat and pondered on personal revelation. In this chapter the Lord is beginning to explain how revelation works to "receive a knowledge of whatsoever things you shall ask in faith, with an honest heart, believing that you shall receive a knowledge concerning....by the manifestation of my Spirit." It truly is a learning process to understand how the Spirit speaks to me. It's like a baby trying to walk and making all the parts move together at the same time. You can totally expect to fall a few times, if not many.

So, I asked myself how do I identify the Holy Ghost is speaking to me? The best way for me to describe it is to share a story.

I had a desire to get out of debt. As I studied our finances and prayed it was clear it was time to get rid of our storage unit. I gave my husband an ultimatum, get our storage unit cleared out by a certain date. If it wasn't cleared out then I would stop payment on the unit anyways and they could have whatever was left in there. He had several months. He made the deadline with time to spare.

No sooner was the storage unit cleared then while sitting in my computer room an impression came to me. I heard my own voice in my mind. It said "You have to decide today if you are going to buy a Tuff Shed." That was a totally random thought. I didn't need a Tuff Shed, I just got rid of our storage unit. Again the thought came and I couldn't think of why I needed one. When the impression came again it said "Not only that, it needs windows, heat and air conditioning". I knew then that the Spirit was speaking to me and telling me something I needed to do. This was not my own idea.

So I asked what I needed to use this shed for? The impression that it was an art studio came to me. My husband is an artist it must be for him. I now knew in my mind and heart that I had to go look at Tuff Sheds today. I told my husband and he happily went with me to Home Depot to look at the Tuff Sheds on display. I found that it was perfect timing to buy one, for two sales were merging. Thankfully, I could cover the cost of the shed from what I saved monthly on the storage unit. When the Tuff Shed was built a neighbor helped us run electricity so it could have heat and air conditioning.

We were still in this stage of wiring the shed when my prodigal daughter that had been estranged from us for several years contact us. We meet, and soon it became evident she needed to move back home. The art studio became her home and since being here her love of art has had time to blossom and is now her full-time career. This is what the Lord had planned all along. For revelation is given to further His work, with faith required by us to act upon it.

When this verse describes that it will "dwell in your heart" that is key to me. For, the mind and heart, can easily be deceived. It is the spirit dwelling there between the two that helps me understand.

Day 2011

Today's Favorite Verse: Ezekiel 20:12, 20

Today's Favorite Verse: Ezekiel 20:12, 20
"Moreover also I gave them my sabbaths, to be a sign between me and them, that they might know that I am the Lord that sanctify them.
And hallow my sabbaths; and they shall be a sign between me and you, that ye may know that I am the Lord your God."

How I worship on the Sabbath is a sign to God. If I hallow it, I will be sanctified. That is a great promise. I reflected on what a difference reading the scriptures has made in how I keep the Sabbath day holy. I am much more observant of what I do. Sunday is my favorite day of the week. It is the best day to study the word of God. I prepare all week by reading the word of God, and then on Sundays He in turns blesses me with a greater capacity to understand. Part of the sign is I will know, "I am the Lord your God".

Day 1397

Tuesday, October 30, 2018

Today's Favorite Verse: Isaiah 58:13-14

Today's Favorite Verse: Isaiah 58:13-14
"If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the Lord, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words:
Then shalt thou delight thyself in the Lord; and I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it."

I absolutely love the Sabbath day. It is a delight to me. It wasn't always so. My soul is well feed and rested on this holy day, as I am more careful about what I do before and after going to church. I love sitting with my family discussing what we learned at church that day. We just can't wait to come home to talk with each other. I can't wait for next year's home-centered gospel learning. We have been prepared and it can only get better. I sit in amazement on how enlightening it is to study the scriptures particularly on this day, either with family or by myself. Pondering the scriptures is the greatest investment of my time on this day. I am so grateful for all the gospel learning materials available at my fingers. I am so blessed.

Day 1312

Friday, October 19, 2018

Today's Favorite Verse: Isaiah 46:10

Today's Favorite Verse: Isaiah 46:10
"Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure:"

This verse reminded me of a college course I took. It was a computer class and the instructor would give a weekly test, and the day before he would actually say, "This is what will be on the test." We could take notes. I was the only one in the class that sat at my computer typing as fast as I could all the test questions as he read them aloud. From those notes I would make a test paper for myself. The paper was folded in half and on one side were the questions and on the other side the answers. I would quiz myself flipping the paper back and forth going over each question and answer. I was acing all my tests. Soon the other students noticed what was happening and asked me what I was studying before the test. I told them all the test questions. How did you get them they asked? Ummm, from the teacher, when he said "This is what will be on the test."  It wasn't any mystery you just had to be paying attention. Soon they wanted copies of my notes. I thought good luck with that. I worked on them all day after class. You want to cram minutes before the test. I didn't stay in that class long because I found out I could actually test out of it and I did.

Why this experience came to mind was it's the same with Heavenly Father's plan. He has told us it from the very beginning. You will be tried and tested. These are my commandments you need to keep them. Faith, repentance and baptism are needed to return back to me. He has even told prophets through all generations what events will take place leading up to the end of time. There is no mystery, I just have to read the book. If I listen and prepare I will ace this test.

Day 1301

Wednesday, April 25, 2018

Today's Favorite Verse: Psalms 71:1

Today's Favorite Verse: Psalms 71:1
"In thee, O Lord, do I put my trust: let me never be put to confusion."

I pondered on confusion, no sense of direction. It made me think of this verse.

"But if it be not right you shall have no feelings, but you shall have a stupor of thought that shall cause you to forget that thing which is wrong; therefore, you cannot write that which is sacred save it be given you from me."
"Doctrine and Covenants 9:9)

If I went against the stupor of thought and did my own will, that truly would lead to confusion. Trusting in the Lord, means I listen to the prompting of the spirit. Acting upon His will would never put me to confusion.

Day 1124

Saturday, March 10, 2018

Today's Favorite Verse: Psalms 25:4-5

Today's Favorite Verse: Psalms 25:4-5
"Shew me thy ways, O Lord; teach me thy paths.
Lead me in thy truth, and teach me: for thou art the God of my salvation; on thee do I wait all the day."

I pondered on how being instructed of the Lord is a journey of discovery. Line upon line I am taught. How at first it was tiny beams of light coming through a mist of darkness. If I wasn't careful I would miss it. Slowly the frequency increased. I'm talking years of studying and pondering the scriptures every day. At first I couldn't even read and comprehend. I had to listen to a recording as I read along, because my illness had robbed me of my comprehension. I just listened and kept at it. It healed me. Now I read and can feel power coming from the words. My soul if filled with joy and happiness. I attend the temple and see new things every time. I am excited about what I will learn new each day, as I wait on the Lord. Consistency and saying this is important to me, and I want to learn, has brought me to this beautiful place. For I know the Lord will teach me as I am ready and able to comprehend. The path he takes me on, if I let him, is perfectly designed for me. I wouldn't have it any other way.

"And it came to pass that I beheld others pressing forward, and they came forth and caught hold of the end of the rod of iron; and they did press forward through the mist of darkness, clinging to the rod of iron, even until they did come forth and partake of the fruit of the tree." (1 Nephi 8:24)

"And it came to pass that I beheld a tree, whose fruit was desirable to make one happy.
And it came to pass that I did go forth and partake of the fruit thereof; and I beheld that it was most sweet, above all that I ever before tasted. Yea, and I beheld that fruit thereof was white, to exceed all the whiteness that I had ever seen.
And as I partook of the fruit thereof it filled my soul with exceedingly great joy; wherefore, I began to be desirous that my family should partake of it also; for I knew that it was desirable above all other fruit." (1 Nephi 8:10-12)

Day 1078

Sunday, May 29, 2016

Today's Favorite Verse: D&C 9:7-9

Today's Favorite Verse: Doctrine & Covenants 9:7-9
"Behold, you have not understood; you have supposed that I would give it unto you, when you took no thought save it was to ask me.
But, behold, I say unto you, that you must study it out in your mind; then you must ask me if it be right, and if it is right I will cause that your bosom shall burn within you; therefore, you shall feel that it is right.
But it it be not right you shall have no such feelings, but you shall have a stupor of thought that shall cause you to forget the thing which is wrong; therefore, you cannot write that which is sacred save it be given you from me."

This chapter was written after Oliver Cowdery's failed attempt to translate the Book of Mormon. His act of failure has blessed millions. Simply because this revelation was given as a result. It has been my anchor in making so many decisions in life. I truly have had that stupor of thought when the thing that I ask is wrong. I have also felt a burning in my bosom when the answer is correct. Having both experiences have been necessary for me to learn. It has helped me grow more confident in the answers God gives me.

The more I have learned to study the matter out in my mind before I go to the Lord, the quicker the resolutions have come. Studying is not doubting its part of a necessary process to learn and understand the will of God. It truly is amazing how inspiration comes during those periods. Not only do I now move forward in faith that it is God's will, but I also have the wisdom that goes along with it.

The other thing I have learned from Oliver's experience is there truly are never any failures. The Lord gives me learning experiences. I have in the past been rather shaken when the answer I knew God gave me turns out in supposed failure. It has caused all types of doubt in myself and the Lord. It isn't until I learned His wisdom is greater than mine, he had something else to teach me. I see what I called a failure lead to a better way down the road. That the experience brings things together in a way it never would have happened otherwise. His ways are not my ways, and the path he has me walk blesses me in the end. Failures are just another way to grow. Failures can be blessings in disguise in the end. I am so grateful Oliver failed.

Day 428
