Today's Favorite Verse: Matthew 23:5-7, 12

Today's Favorite Verse: Matthew 23:5-7, 12
"But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments,
And love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues,
And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi."
And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted."

Jesus is speaking of the scribes and Pharisees that did things to be seen of men. This reminded of the contrast Elder Bednar spoke of in his recent general conference talk.

"In 1990, President Howard W. Hunter, then President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, delivered a message about the indispensable contributions of countless Church members who serve diligently and faithfully and who receive little or no public acknowledgment or acclaim."
'President Hunter then counseled all of us to be no less serviceable. He said: “If you feel that much of what you do this year or in the years to come does not make you very famous, take heart. Most of the best people who ever lived weren’t very famous either. Serve and grow, faithfully and quietly.”
(Howard W. Hunter, “No Less Serviceable” (Brigham Young University devotional, Sept. 2, 1990), 1–2, speeches.byu.edu.)

"The phrase “in the path of their duty” describes spouses and children who support a companion, parent, or child who serves in a leadership position in the Lord’s restored Church. Their steady, quiet, and typically unrecognized sustaining influence makes possible the blessing of many individuals and families in ways that will be fully known only in eternity."
"Through the gift of tongues with which they have been blessed, translators and interpreters serve diligently, selflessly, and, most often, anonymously to help people receive the spiritual gift of faith through reading and hearing the word of God."
(David A. Bednar, "In the Path of Their Duty", Oct 2023 General Conference)

Today's Favorite Verse: Malachi 1:10, 13

Today's Favorite Verse: Malachi 1:10, 13
"Who is there even among you that would shut the doors for nought? neither do ye kindle fire on mine altar for nought. I have no pleasure in you, saith the LORD of hosts, neither will I accept an offering at your hand.
Ye said also, Behold, what a weariness is it! and ye have snuffed at it, saith the LORD of hosts; and ye brought that which was torn, and the lame, and the sick; thus ye brought an offering: should I accept this of your hand? saith the LORD "

The Lord is telling Israel why their offerings were not acceptable. They wouldn't as much as kindle fire for the altar without being paid for it. The offerings they did give were not clean and pure as required. They gave what was of the poorest quality, their rejects. They were going through the motions without thought or feeling, maybe with duty, but not with love. It made me ponder on my attitudes sometimes.

Today's Favorite Verse: 1 Chronicles 24:5, 19

Today's Favorite Verse: 1 Chronicles 24:5, 19
"Thus were they divided by lot, one sort with another; for the governors of the sanctuary, and governors of the house of God, were of the sons of Eleazar, and the sons of Ithamar.
These were the orderings of them in their service to come into the house of the Lord, according to their manner, under Aaron their father, as the Lord God of Israel had commanded him."

The Lord's House is a house of order. I thought about callings and how there is order there. Everyone is to learn and know their duty. How this helps to build the Lord's kingdom and strengthen the saints.

Today's Favorite Verse: Ecclesiastes 12:13

Today's Favorite Verse: Ecclesiastes 12:13
"Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man."

I pondered on how just these two simple things will bring eternal life. In the scheme of things not much is being asked of me. What it all requires in faith on my end to just do it.
