Today's favorite verse: Hebrews 5:12
"For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat."
I pondered on the need to be reminded of the milk of the gospel and not the meat before teaching others. First, I know its best to understand those basic principles and what is essential so you can in turn teach it to others. Then I wondered what was so special about milk, making it the first thing we must have? This made me think of nursing babies. The "first milk" a mother produces is colostrum. It is easily digestible and full of unique disease-fighting antibodies that strengthen a babies immune system.
So now I realize that milk really isn't something lesser its something needful. When we first hear the gospel we need to receive all the disease-fighting antibodies that will strengthen us for a lifetime. We need to understand the plan of salvation and purpose of life. The Lord's protecting love and support for us. Now He will shield us from the adversary that ever seeks to destroy. If we start at the beginning, the basics of the gospel, we receive not only proper nourishment, but a strong immune system for our protection. I am realizing the beauty of this design is we can revisit the basics of the gospel again and again. Every time we repent we can get another dose of "first milk" to replace that which was lost. These are the life saving foundations that put everything else in their proper place. Eventually when we get to the meat, the foundation of the milk must ever stay present, or we could become lost or deceived. What a beautiful plan.
