"And we had obtained the records which the Lord had commanded us, and searched them and found that they were desirable; yea, even of great worth unto us, insomuch that we could preserve the commandments of the Lord unto our children."
Nephi and his brother go back to Jerusalem as commanded and obtained the Brass Plates that were in Laban's possession. Here is a list of what they found the plates contained.

Genealogy of his fathers, that they are a descendant of Joseph, son of Jacob
Laban was a descendant of Joseph, that is why he and father's kept the record.
After Nephi's father Lehi reads these records he then is filled with the Spirit and begins to prophesy concerning his seed. I sat and pondered on how reading the scriptures fills me with the spirit every day. Just losing one day makes a difference in my life. If Lehi's family had come to the promise land without a copy of most of the Old Testament they would have soon forgotten the Lord and his commandments. So not only was having the scripture important to them, its important for me. I need to cherish them and read from them daily. Not only personally but also as a family. That is one way I can always have the spirit to be with me, it makes remembering the Lord and keeping the commandments easier.
