Today's Favorite Verse: Mosiah 6:1

Today's Favorite Verse: Mosiah 6:1
"And now, king Benjamin thought it was expedient, after having finished speaking to the people, that he should take the names of all those who had entered into a covenant with God to keep his commandments."

This verse reminded me of the importance of keeping records. Even in the early days of the restoration the Lord commanded the church to keep a history and record. Doctrine & Covenants 128:8 "Now, the nature of this ordinance consists in the power of the priesthood, by the revelation of Jesus Christ, wherein it is granted that whatsoever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatsoever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. Or, in other words, taking a different view of the translation, whatsoever you record on earth shall be recorded in heaven, and whatsoever you do not record on earth shall not be recorded in heaven."

I pondered on the importance of covenant and oath taking. That the Lord's kingdom is a place of order. We record the names of those that enter into a covenant with the performance of ordinances in records here on earth, but it is also recorded in heaven. I pondered on the need of two records of the same thing. It made me think of how records on earth can be lost to the elements or disintegrate over time. The records containing the names king Benjamin had recorded are probably all gone now. What a comfort I am sure it is to his people that there is a record in heaven of the covenants they made.

As I pondered some more on this I think there might be another reason for two records. It is the law of witnesses. The two records act as a witness of the covenant entered into. There are people on earth that witness the covenant, and angels in heaven that do that same. This is not just a formality to record a name, it really is a sacred holy act.
