Today's Favorite Verse: Numbers 36:6-8
"This is the thing which the LORD doth command concerning the daughters of Zelophehad, saying, Let them marry to whom they think best; only to the family of the tribe of their father shall they marry.
So shall not the inheritance of the children of Israel remove from tribe to tribe: for every one of the children of Israel shall keep himself to the inheritance of the tribe of his fathers.
And every daughter, that possesseth an inheritance in any tribe of the children of Israel, shall be wife unto one of the family of the tribe of her father, that the children of Israel may enjoy every man the inheritance of his fathers."
Zelophehad had no sons, only daughters. Those daughters had requested that they also receive an inheritance and it was granted them. Then the concern is what happens when those daughters marry into various other twelve tribes? The law had been that the children of Israel marry within the family of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. They were freely marrying between each other. To do so now that they were given inheritances it would soon be lost from one tribe and claimed by another. This is when instruction is given Moses on how to handle the inheritances that belong to daughters. They are to marry from within their own tribes. Seems like such a simply solution. Then it made me ponder on the importance of marrying within ones own faith, and the raising of children. There is no concern on how those children will be raised and in what faith. Such a simple solution.
