Today's Favorite Verse: 2 Kings 12:2, 18
And Jehoash did that which was right in the sight of the LORD all his days wherein Jehoiada the priest instructed him.
And Jehoash king of Judah took all the hallowed things that Jehoshaphat, and Jehoram, and Ahaziah, his fathers, kings of Judah, had dedicated, and his own hallowed things, and all the gold that was found in the treasures of the house of the LORD, and in the king’s house, and sent it to Hazael king of Syria: and he went away from Jerusalem."
The story kind of jumps here. Jehoash does right in the sight of the Lord as he does as Jehoiada the priest instructs him. He has the breaches in the temple repaired. Then suddenly the story turns and he is giving the hallowed things and treasures found in the house of the Lord to Hazael king of Syria. To figure out why the about face I had to do as verse 19 tells me. "And the rest of the acts of Joash, and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the the kings of Judah?" There I found the key element missing, the priest Jehoiada had died.
"Now after the death of Jehoiada came the princes of Judah, and made obeisance to the king. Then the king hearkened unto them."
(2 Chronicles 24:17)
Without a man of God to listen to Jehoash the king listened to those that led him astray. It is a reminder to listen to the voice of the Lord through his chosen servants, and not the men of the world.
