Today's Favorite Verse: Alma 40:21
"But whether it be at his resurrection or after, I do not say; but this much I say, that there is a space between death and the resurrection of the body, and a state of the soul in happiness or in misery until the time which is appointed of God that the dead shall come forth, and be reunited, both soul and body, and be brought to stand before God, and be judged according to their works."
I love this chapter. While reading it one day I had that AH! moment where a gospel mystery was finally opened up to me. For I had many times tried to figure out how there was paradise, and outer darkness, heaven and hell, and varying degrees of glory. All these places are mentioned in the scriptures.
Alma so clearly explains all this to his son Corianton, which the recording of this finally made everything fit for me. Once a person dies they are called back to that God that gave them life, and will enter into paradise in a state of happiness and peace. If they were wicked and evil they cannot go there, but instead they are cast out into outer darkness, where there is weeping, wailing and gnashing of teeth. This is clearly spoken of in the scriptures. It isn't until after they are resurrected that final judgment is given. Then the degree of glory that they will retain is given them. This chapter is the one I have marked that explain how all the pieces fit together.
