Today's Favorite Verse: 1 Chronicles 6:54
"Now these are their dwelling places throughout their castles in their coasts, of the sons of Aaron, of the families of the Kohathites: for theirs was the lot."
I tried to keep track of these generations. When I saw the sons of Aaron were referred to as the Kohathites I remembered Kohath was the son of Levi, son of Jacob or Israel. Kohath was Aaron and Moses' grandfather. That made Jacob their second great-grandfather. There is four generations between them. Just like it said in the scriptures.
"And he said unto Abram, Know of a surety that thy seed shall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them; and they shall afflict them four hundred years;"
But in the fourth generation they shall come hither again: for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet full."
(Genesis 15:13, 16)
"Now the sojourning of the children of Israel, who dwelt in Egypt, was four hundred and thirty years."
(Exodus 12:40)
Levi, son of Jacob lived 137 years. His son Kohath lived 133 years. (see Exodus 6:16, 18) That makes up 270 years out of the 400 years they were in Egypt. Moses was 80 years old when he lead the Israelites out of Egypt. The only one I don't have an age on is Moses and Aaron's father Amram. It just never occurred to me how closely related Moses was to Jacob. It makes sense now how everyone knew what tribe they belonged to, and how they come up with the names for the places that they settled.
