Today's Favorite Verse: Numbers 8:3-4

Today's Favorite Verse: Numbers 8:3-4
"And Aaron did so; he lighted the lamps thereof over against the candlestick, as the Lord commanded Moses.
And this work of the candlestick was of beaten gold, unto the shaft thereof, unto the flowers thereof, was beaten work: according unto the pattern which the Lord had shewed Moses, so he made the candlestick.

This made me think of following the prophet, for he does receive the will, mind, word and voice of the Lord.

"And whatsoever they shall speak when moved upon by the Holy Ghost shall be scripture, shall be the will of the Lord, shall be the mind of the Lord, shall be the word of the Lord, shall be the voice of the Lord, and the power of God unto salvation."
(Doctrine and Covenants 68:4)

Today's Favorite Verse: Numbers 7:11-12

Today's Favorite Verse: Numbers 7:11-12
"And the Lord said unto Moses, They shall offer their offering, each prince on his day, for the dedicating of the altar.
And he that offered his offering the first day was Nahshon the son of Amminadab, of the tribe of Judah."

I knew the order each tribe made their offering for the dedication of the altar had to be following some pattern. It wasn't the birth order of the tribes of Israel. After some pondering I finally figured out the order for each prince on his day. It's the same order given in chapter 2 where each tribe was to camp. The order went from east, south, west, and north. The tribe of Levi was in the middle and they were the ones that served. The order was given by the Lord in how they would setup camp, after each of the tribes were numbered. This reminded me of temple dedications and how different stakes have a set day and session they are to attend.

Today's Favorite Verse: Numbers 6:24-27

Today's Favorite Verse: Numbers 6:24-27
"The Lord bless thee, and keep thee:
The Lord make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee:
The Lord lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.
And they shall put my name upon the children of Israel; and I will bless them."

I read these words and can just hear President Thomas S. Monson as he used to conclude some conference talks with them. What a gentle soul.

Today's Favorite Verse: Numbers 5:27

Today's Favorite Verse: Numbers 5:27
"And when he hath made her to drink the water, then it shall come to pass, that, if she be defiled, and have done trespass against her husband, that the water that causeth the curse shall enter into her, and become bitter, and her belly shall swell, and her thigh shall rot: and the woman shall be a curse among her people."

Well, I don't understand this chapter very well. As I'm reading this I kept thinking of the way the puritans would test if someone was a witch. Basically they would die and nothing was really proven. In this situation the husband is jealous of his wife, which may or may not have been unfaithful to him. This was the test to see if she was unfaithful. I have to remember that during the time of the law of Moses it was an eye for eye and tooth for tooth. This was a stiff-necked people that would not live a higher law. It's not my way, and I will leave the matter in the Lord's hand on how he taught them. As for the witch trials they were not men of God. This was not the Lord's way of treating people. There is something to be said for following the living prophet. In the time of Moses they followed the prophet and the commandments they were given. I would much rather have gone through the test for jealousy as an innocent person at the hands of a priest, than a puritan testing for witches. My faith would be that the Lord would take care of me it the law being followed was from Him.

Today's Favorite Verse: Numbers 4:5

Today's Favorite Verse: Numbers 4:5
"And when the camp setteth forward, Aaron shall come, and his sons, and they shall take down the covering veil, and cover the ark of testimony with it:"

The Lord is giving them directions on how they are to move the tabernacle. After Aaron and his sons cover the holy things in the tabernacle, the Levites do their part to disassemble and carry the items. The assignments are given by families. Nothing is to insignificant to not be considered a holy task. It made me think of our callings in the church and no matter how insignificant it maybe it is of great importance to the Lord in how it is carried out.

Day 2280

Today's Favorite Verse: Numbers 3:12-13

Today's Favorite Verse: Numbers 3:12-13
"And I, behold, I have taken the Levites from among the children of Israel instead of all the firstborn that openeth the matrix among the children of Israel: therefore the Levites shall be mine;
Because all the firstborn are mine; for on the day that I smote all the firstborn in the land of Egypt I hallowed unto me all the firstborn in Israel, both man and beast: mine shall they be: I am the Lord.

Instead of all the firstborn being counted the Lord's, the tribe of Levi was to serve as priests. All the first born males one month an older from the eleven tribes were counted. When compared against the number of males one month and older of the tribe of Levi, they were 273 males short. Redemption money was paid to the Levites for there being less males to serve. It's interesting that even in this transaction of counting first born, and redemption being paid, it still symbolized the ultimate first born son, Jesus Christ and the redemption he has paid for all of us.

Day 2279

Today's Favorite Verse: Numbers 2:10, 12

Today's Favorite Verse: Numbers 2:10, 12
"On the south side shall be the standard of the camp of Reuben according to their armies: and the captain of the children of Reuben shall be Elizur the son of Shedeur.
And those which pitch by him shall be the tribe of Simeon: and the captain of the children of Simeon shall be Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai."

As I was reading about which tribe will camp next to another I had to smile, when I could see a practical application for something in the scriptures. It made me think about my recent efforts in organizing my food storage area. It took a lot of thought to inventory, count and find a home where things would fit. The project is still not done. Though now I can see I am on the right track in my efforts with taking care in how things are setup.

Day 2278

Today's Favorite Verse: Numbers 1:45-46

Today's Favorite Verse: Numbers 1:45-46
"So were all those that were numbered of the children of Israel, by the house of their fathers, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war in Israel;
Even all they that were numbered were six hundred thousand and three thousand and five hundred and fifty."

Moses and Aaron are commanded to number all the men twenty years old and upward. The count is broken down by tribes. As I was reading all these numbers I thought how each person was a unique individual to God. That they all mattered. As I reflected on this I thought of President Nelson invitation to the young woman and young men between the ages of 12 and 18 in the church to enlist in the youth battalion of the Lord to help gather Israel. Where will the youngest be in 8 more years when they are twenty? The 20 year old of Israel would be in their 60's before Israel was allowed in the promised land. Of these men only 2 were allowed to enter.

Day 2277

Tuesday, June 22, 2021

Today's Favorite Verse: Leviticus 27:32-33

Today's Favorite Verse: Leviticus 27:32-33
"And concerning the tithe of the herd, or of the flock, even of whatsoever passeth under the rod, the tenth shall be holy unto the Lord.
He shall not search whether it be good or bad, neither shall he change it: and if he change it at all, then both it and the change thereof shall be holy; it shall not be redeemed."

I found this interesting explanation of what it meant to pass under the rod, and not change it.

"Do you know what that means? I will relate the history as it has come down to us. When they came to pay their tithing the Lord told them it should not be the poorest, neither would he ask the best; therefore they put their flock or herd in a pen having an outlet just large enough for one to pass out at a time, and as the animals passed in single-file, the owner stood by with a rod in his hand that had been dipped in some sort of coloring material, counting them as they came out, and touching every tenth animal with his colored rod. He would not go in among them and pick them lest his judgment might not be right, but the flock passed out according to their own inclination, and as they passed, the owner stood with the coloring rod and marked on the back of every tenth animal, and after all had passed out to an adjoining fold, those that were marked were then picked out from the flock. “He shall not search whether it be good or bad, neither shall he change it: and if he change it at all, then both it and the change thereof shall be holy; it shall not be redeemed.” They were to take it as it came, not to pick the good nor the bad; this was the requirement, that they should give to the Lord tithes of all"
(Franklin D. Richards, "Tithes and Offerings, etc." delivered at Logan, 6 Nov 1882)

When tithing they only needed to give a tenth, and that was without judgment. When it was an offering it needed to be unblemished and the best. As I look at what I do today I realize it is the same. A tenth of my increase has no judgment. It is simply a tenth. But when I make an offering the judgment is mine to make as to how much. It should cover the cost of two meals. I could make each meal the cost of a bowl of cream of wheat, or the cost of a fine restaurant dinner. The offering is mine to make in how I value it. The Lord will judge based on where my heart is and if it is acceptable.

Day 2276

Monday, June 21, 2021

Today's Favorite Verse: Leviticus 26:2-4

Today's Favorite Verse: Leviticus 26:2-4
"Ye shall keep my sabbaths, and reverence my sanctuary: I am the Lord.
If ye walk in my statues, and keep my commandments, and do them;
Then I will give you rain in due season, and the land shall yield her increase, and the trees of the field shall yield their fruit."

Rain is a lot on my mind. We are in the middle of a drought and severe heat wave. It made me reflect on President Spencer W. Kimball and our fasting and prayers for rain when there was a national drought. This is from his home ward history.

"Living the Law of the Fast:
President Kimball encouraged us to follow his example in living the law of the fast. As we did, the members of the ward gained great blessings. During these years, the Monument Park 2nd ward led the Church in the per capita amount of contributions made to the Fast Offering fund of the Church. On one occasion when the entire Church had been requested to fast and pray for the Lord to remove the drought conditions, President Kimball taught us the power that come from knowing the scriptures.
When he came to Sacrament meeting, my usual custom was to greet him and ask him if he had any instructions for the bishopric as the presiding officer. His usual response was: “Carry on bishop as thought I were not here.” On this Sunday, I had been delayed in my office I did not have the chance to greet him before coming to the stand. During the course of the meeting, the Spirit prompted me to ask him if he would like to give the closing prayer on this special occasion. I quickly wrote the following note and passed it to the chair which he always sat in saying: “In light of the special fast, would you care to offer the closing prayer? Bishop Oswald.” A few minutes the note came back to me with this answer penned in red ink: “Or say a word or two before the prayer, either—as you say.”
At the close of the meeting, I said that because of the special nature of the worldwide fast being observed by the members of the Church, I had asked President Kimball if he would take a few minutes and instruct the congregation on the importance of the fast. For the next ten minutes, the members of the ward had the opportunity to witness a Prophet of God, under the inspiration of the Holy Ghost, speak with power and authority. Without any notes, President Kimball quoted from memory several passages from the Old Testament on the importance of fasting and prayer in petitioning the Lord to send forth rain. He recited the pattern found in the scriptures where God had withheld rain in order to teach the people to be humble and obedient as they acknowledge their dependence upon the Lord for the blessings given conditional upon their personal righteousness. President Kimball wonder aloud whether or not the members were living the commandments to be worthy of asking God to open the windows of heaven and send forth the moisture so necessary to sustain life. It was a masterful demonstration of one who, over a lifetime of scriptural reading and study, had come to know the scriptures and the Author of those sacred writings given to Gods prophets in past dispensations.
At the end of the meeting, the Prophet prayed. Afterwards, the congregation was immovable and did not want to leave or break the marvelous Spirit that was present and felt by all. Many members went home and wrote in their journals of having been taught that day by a living Prophet speaking under the mantle of his authority and by the influence of the Spirit. It was a sacred experience worth remembering and recording in personal journals.
The Relief Society president wrote in her journal: “President Kimball is such a tremendous example to us all. He spoke so much about our personal worthiness as a prerequisite to fasting and praying for the rain, that I am sure there were many present today who did some deeply introspective soul searching of our own, as I did.” “Then I had the most thrilling experience of my life. I heard the Prophet pray. I felt the very heavens open up in that sweet but powerful communication between our Heavenly Father and his most chosen of all servants on the earth. He thanked the Lord for the Prophets of old–in a manner that made me feel he had a very personal relationship with those prophets. . . As I left my choir seat at the close of the meeting, brushing the tears from my eyes, I saw the members of the congregation, men and women alike, doing the same. We were all visibly moved by the power, the sweetness and the challenge of this most significant prayer. Especially to hear the humble Prophet say: “Lord, we pray that we may be found worthy to ask.”
----
"Recalling President Kimball’s calling made manifest in their ward:
The entire Monument Park 2nd ward was present in Sacrament Meeting the day in which President Kimball ended 3 days of his personal fasting and prayer, because of his concern over the national drought that year. President Kimball took a unique direction in this Sacrament Meeting....speaking, then ending his address in prayer. As he spoke, he stopped for many seconds....looked upward to the chapel ceiling...then said "Brothers and Sisters, the Lord has just made it known to me that the reason for the drought we have been experiencing is that we have become a nation of Sabbath breakers. He then began his prayer which was amazing to hear...he addressed Heavenly Father as GOD, creator and governor of the Universe. It was so very reverent and worshipful with infinite respect for His Godhood. President Kimball then prayed and promised the Lord that we would make new efforts to keep his Sabbath day holy. Within weeks, church publications began emphasizing the Sabbath, and within a week after that, the rains began to fall...and the nationwide drought was ended. As one little ward in Zion, we witnessed the prophet and the Lord working together on a global scale."

As I read this I wondered why we have not held a fast as a church for rain? I know last Fast Sunday the governor asked us to pray for rain and many of us included this in our monthly fast. I'm sure as a church we will be asked when the timing is right for this to be over. For now there are many lessons for us to learn. My part is to make sure I am worthy to ask, that I keep the Sabbath day holy, and continue to fast and pray for rain.

Day 2275

Sunday, June 20, 2021

Today's Favorite Verse: Leviticus 25:4-5,

Today's Favorite Verse: Leviticus 25:4-5,
"But in the seventh year shall be a sabbath of rest unto the land, a sabbath for the Lord: thou shalt neither sow thy field, nor prune thy vineyard.
That which groweth of its own accord of thy harvest thou shalt not reap, neither gather the grapes of thy vine undressed: for it is a year of rest unto the land.

This chapter speaks of the 50th year jubilee, and the sabbath year that Israel celebrated every seven years. In the sabbath year they could not sow nor gather from the land the entire year. The land had to rest. I could not help but think of food storage. There was more to this then just having a one year supply of food.

"And if ye shall say, What shall we eat the seventh year? behold, we shall not sow, nor gather in our increase:
Then I will command my blessing upon you in the sixth year, and it shall bring forth fruit for three years.
And ye shall sow the eighth year, and eat yet of old fruit until the until the ninth year; until her fruits come in ye shall eat of the old store."
(Leviticus 25:20-22)

They needed to prepare three years of food in one year. The year they were eating, the year at rest, and a year until the next harvest came in. The Lord did promise to bless them in the sixth year to make that possible. I would think with grains they would have gathered a surplus in between these years too. This reminds me of what President Nelson said, to "never stop preparing!" It looks like self-reliance and preparedness has always been a counsel of the Lord.

Day 2274

Today's Favorite Verse: Leviticus 24:20

Today's Favorite Verse: Leviticus 24:20
"Breach for breach, eye for eye, tooth for tooth: as he hath caused a blemish in a man, so shall it be done to him again.

These laws were so harsh. I am grateful that Jesus Christ taught a higher law. As I ponder on this I wonder if some think what is asked now is hard thing too?

"Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for eye, and a tooth for a tooth:
But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on the right cheek, turn to him the other also.
And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloak also.
And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain.
Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.
(Matthew 5:38-42)

Day 2273

Friday, June 18, 2021

Today's Favorite Verse: Leviticus 23:3

Today's Favorite Verse: Leviticus 23:3
"Six days shall work be done: but the seventh day is the sabbath of rest, an holy convocation; ye shall do no work therein: it is the sabbath of the Lord in all your dwellings."

This chapter speaks of the various feasts the children of Israel celebrated. It was a time of gathering, harvest, rejoicing, renewal and remembrance. The only thing out of this list that I observe is the Sabbath as a day of rest, and worship. I guess what is different is I observe the sacrament. That is a feast of a different type right there. In many ways I can see the previous feasts observed are cumulative into the spiritual renewal, feasting on the spirit and remembrance of the Savior that come by partaking of the sacrament.

Day 2272

Thursday, June 17, 2021

Today's Favorite Verse: Leviticus 22:29

Today's Favorite Verse: Leviticus 22:29
"And when ye will offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving unto the Lord, offer it at your own will."

I just learned tonight that I missed the email sent 11 hours ago that my temple was in Phase 3 and I could finally schedule an appointment to go. Eleven hours later there was nothing left to schedule. My heart is literally broken and I am grieving at the loss. I wanted to go so badly. Now I can understand why the Lord said to make our sacrifices of thanksgiving and offered at our own will. What a waste of the priest's and your time if you didn't make an offering willing. It would just break my heart even further to think of anyone going to the temple unwillingly right now, when there is just such limited opportunities for many of us to go. I know I cannot be the only one that would have gone rejoicing, if I could have been in your shoes.

Day 2271

Wednesday, June 16, 2021

Today's Favorite Verse: Leviticus 21:13-14

Today's Favorite Verse: Leviticus 21:13-14
"And he shall take a wife in her virginity. A widow, or a divorced woman, or profane, or an harlot, these shall he not take: but he shall take a virgin of his own people to wife."

This is speaking of "he that is the high priest among his brethren". It made me think of how President Russell M. Nelson and President Dallin H. Oaks having both been widowed each remarried women that had been single and never married previously. I don't know if they have been counseled to do that, because President Howard W. Hunter remarried someone that was divorced. I have thought it a lovely idea that these wonderful faithful sisters having waited so long to marry, finally marry apostles of the Lord.

Day 2270

Tuesday, June 15, 2021

Today's Favorite Verse: Leviticus 20:23, 26

Today's Favorite Verse: Leviticus 20:23, 26
"And ye shall not walk in the manners of the nation, which I cast out before you: for they committed all these things, and therefore I abhorred them.
And ye shall be holy unto me: for I the Lord am holy, and have severed you from other people that ye should be mine."

I would imagine there would be some that do not like this chapter, for it speaks of their sins. I sat and pondered on what state as a nation and people we are. Truly its not just this nation, these things are happening among all nations and treated as being enlightened societies today. Maybe that's why we are in the last days. The death spoke of for these sins, is a spiritual death, until God's wrath comes upon them. The challenge is to not walk in the manner of man, but be capable of living a higher law as Christ taught, to love our neighbor as ourselves. Leaving the judgment in the matter in His hands.

What does the Lord mean that he has "severed you from other people"? To be severed from something means its cut-off, the connection is broken or ended. You no long have any effect on what you were disconnected from. Right now I would say I feel severed from those that have the understanding of man. I know my words, thoughts and opinions have no place or effect on them. So, I will just remain cut-off on the subjects and leave them be. That's OK with me. What ultimately matters is how I behave and keep His commandments, even when the world sees it otherwise.

Day 2269
