Today's Favorite Verse: Exodus 20:25-26
"And if thou wilt make me an altar of stone, thou shalt not build it of hewn stone: for it thou lift up thy tool upon it, thou hast polluted it.
Neither shalt thou go up by steps unto mine altar, that they nakedness be not discovered thereon."
This chapter has the ten commandments. I have always focused on them. I was rather surprised to see I had been overlooking something in the last verses, that I hadn't been sure where it was in the bible. The way you know in antiquity if it is a Hebrew or pagan altar is if it is made of unhewn stones and a ramp, instead of stair leading up to it. The ramp would keep the priest from exposing himself as he climbed it. The other reason for a ramp was to lead animals to be sacrificed. The Nephites in the Book of Mormon would have built such temples with altars and ramps since they practiced the law of Moses, before the Savior was resurrected.
Here is one of the Hopewell temple compounds found in the Mississippi Valley that fits that description.
